Lumens vs Watts: How to Compare LED Lights and Pack Sizes
Share
Lumens describe light output. Watts describe electrical power. Pack size tells you how many fixtures are supplied. Keep these three numbers separate when comparing LED lights: a 20-pack of 9W downlights contains twenty 9W fixtures, not twenty 20W fixtures.
That distinction matters when ordering for several rooms, comparing wholesale quotes or checking whether a replacement will provide the light your project needs. Begin with the specification for one fixture, then calculate the quantity required for the order.
Read the numbers in the right order
| Label | What it tells you | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Lumens (lm) | The fixture's light output at a stated setting | The lighting level at every desk, shelf or floor location |
| Watts (W) | The fixture's input power at a stated setting | How bright every competing fixture will be |
| Lumens per watt (lm/W) | Light output divided by input power | Whether the beam and fixture suit the room |
| Pack quantity | The number of fixtures in the sales unit | The wattage or output of an individual fixture |
A real listing example: 20-pack, 9W, 700 lumens
Selix Kala's white 4-inch Multi-Fit LED Disk Light is listed as a 20-pack, with 9W and 700 lumens specified per fixture. Read the order as follows:
- One fixture: 9W input and 700 lumens listed output.
- One pack: 20 fixtures.
- All 20 operating at the listed power: 20 × 9W = 180W.
- Sum of their listed lumen outputs: 20 × 700 = 14,000 lumens.
The summed lumens are an inventory calculation, not a room-lighting design. They do not tell you whether twenty fixtures are appropriate, where to put them, or how evenly they will illuminate the space. Those decisions need the room dimensions, mounting positions and light distribution.
For a quantity example, suppose an approved fixture schedule calls for 36 of these lights and the order is supplied only in complete 20-packs. Two packs would supply 40 fixtures, leaving four spares. Confirm the actual sales unit and quantity on the quote rather than assuming that the cart quantity always means individual lights.
Use efficacy to compare similar products
Luminous efficacy is calculated as lumens ÷ watts. In a hypothetical comparison, fixture A delivers 4,000 lumens at 40W, or 100 lm/W. Fixture B delivers 4,000 lumens at 32W, or 125 lm/W. B provides the same stated total light output with lower input power.
Those are illustrative numbers, not specifications for Selix Kala products. The comparison still needs matching assumptions: the selected setting, complete-fixture output and relevant operating conditions. A high efficacy number does not compensate for unsuitable distribution, mounting or controls. Compare like products for the same job.
Watch for selectable wattage and “equivalent” claims
For a selectable-wattage fixture, ask which setting the quote assumes and request the corresponding lumen output. “Up to” output may describe a different setting from the one intended for your project. Write both selected watts and selected lumens on the comparison sheet.
An “equivalent” wattage is a comparison claim, not the LED's actual power consumption. Identify the actual input watts and the basis of the equivalence before using that claim in an energy calculation. When comparing whole fixtures, do not mix a bare LED-chip figure with delivered luminaire output.
Why equal lumens can look different in a room
Light output and light arriving at a surface are different quantities. A focused display light and a broad panel can distribute their output differently even if the total lumen figures match. Ceiling height, aiming and obstructions also affect the result.
For a large commercial project, use our guide to reviewing a lighting calculation. For display lighting, see how beam angle changes the illuminated area. Colour temperature is another separate decision, covered in our CCT comparison.
Make each quote line comparable
Ask for the exact model, selected watts, listed lumens, fixtures per pack, number of packs and total fixture quantity. Add mounting accessories and control requirements as separate items. This makes a price comparison more useful than comparing two product titles alone.
Send Selix Kala your fixture schedule for a product quote, or browse our LED downlights. Include the quantity of individual fixtures you need so the supplied pack quantities can be checked.
