Who Qualifies for Ontario Commercial Lighting Rebates?
Share
Can your business get an Ontario lighting rebate? Existing Ontario commercial, industrial, agricultural and institutional facilities, plus eligible common areas in multi-unit residential buildings, may qualify for Save on Energy Instant Discounts when purchasing approved lighting from a participating distributor. Eligibility depends on the installation site and the exact equipment—not simply the word “LED.”

Is this a rebate cheque or an upfront discount?
The Instant Discounts Program provides a reduction at the point of sale through participating distributors. Do not assume an advertised program amount will automatically appear in an online cart. Ask for a quote identifying your approved models, quantities and applicable discount before placing the order.
Which projects should be checked first?
The program is for replacing less-efficient lighting in existing facilities. New construction is excluded. For apartments and condominiums, the eligible facility category covers common areas rather than lighting inside individual residential units. A major renovation may also fall within the program's definition of new construction; describe the scope when requesting a review.
The official requirements also address the facility's electricity-grid connection. An Ontario mailing address alone is not a complete eligibility check. See the official program requirements, section 3.
A practical checklist before you buy
- Site: Send the installation address, business name and the use of each space.
- Existing lights: Provide photographs, quantities and readable fixture labels where accessible.
- Proposed lights: Ask for the exact manufacturer model and configuration on the quote.
- Timing: Plan installation within 90 days of purchase, as required by the program.
- Other funding: Disclose incentives already received for the same equipment; duplicate incentives are restricted.
- Budget: Confirm the required customer contribution and the final invoice amount.
Which products should you compare?
Start with the job each light must do. For a suspended office ceiling, browse LED panel lights. For an open warehouse, compare LED high bay lights. For smaller ceiling fixtures, review LED downlights. These links are browsing starting points, not a statement that every model qualifies.
A helpful quote should separate product selection from program verification. Ask the supplier to confirm the model's listing and applicable program category. Keep that confirmation with the quote so a substitution can be checked before delivery.
Questions business owners often ask
Do I need to buy a minimum number of lights?
The official FAQ says the program does not impose a minimum quantity per invoice. Product pricing, delivery and installation costs still affect whether a small order makes sense.
Does an occupancy sensor automatically qualify?
No. Standard controls have a program pathway, while network lighting controls are addressed separately under the Retrofit program. Ask for the specific control type and its eligibility to be checked; “motion sensor” alone is not enough information.
Can I get a firm discount from a photo?
A photo helps start the review, but it may not show the model number, electrical specifications or installation details. Treat an initial estimate as preliminary until those details are confirmed.
Send one clear project request
Use this outline: “Our site is at [address]. We want to replace approximately [quantity] lights in [space type]. Existing fixtures are [type, if known]. Our intended installation date is [date]. Please recommend suitable models and confirm any available Instant Discount.” Attach photos and identify separate buildings or lighting zones.
