A Practical LED Lighting Buying Guide for Ontario Businesses

Upgrading commercial lighting is not simply a matter of buying a lower-wattage bulb. A good lighting plan starts with the work performed in the space, the existing electrical and mounting conditions, desired light distribution and the way the area is occupied. For Toronto-area offices, retail stores, facilities, workshops and warehouses, the four major LED lighting families solve different problems.

This 2026 guide explains how to compare LED panel lights, high bay fixtures, recessed downlights and LED strip and rope lights before purchasing. It also distinguishes quoted wholesale prices from potential Ontario Save on Energy Instant Discounts, which depend on the exact product and site.

Quick Guide: Match the Lighting Fixture to the Space

Which commercial LED lighting family fits your project?
Lighting family Primary purpose Select by Examples on Selix Kala
LED flat panel lights Broad ceiling illumination in offices and retail spaces Nominal 1×4 / 2×2 / 2×4 format, ceiling type, voltage, CCT and sensor base Jupiter panels, Sensor Base and No Sensor Base variants
LED high bay lights Larger areas with high ceilings Photometric layout, lumens, beam, suspension, occupancy controls UFO 200W / 300W and Linear models
LED downlights Focused recessed, accent and corridor lighting Cut-out, mounting depth, aimability, CCT, dimming and PIR sensor Apolo 4-inch 9W 5-CCT, gimbal, slim and PIR downlights
LED strip & rope lights Display, cove, signage and decorative lighting Supply voltage, IP rating, profile, colour and run length 24V COB / Neon Flex; 5V USB RGB and decorative rope lights

For a retrofit, start by identifying your ceiling type and installation height, not by trying to make one product line serve every application. Compare each linked collection's listed variants, performance documentation and control options.

1. LED Panel Lights for Offices, Retail and Commercial Ceiling Grids

1×4, 2×2 and 2×4 LED flat panels are natural candidates for suitable suspended-ceiling grids and commercial interior lighting. Selix Kala's panel range contains 4-pack listings for all three formats, with Sensor Base and No Sensor Base options. The nominal dimension tells you the fixture format but not the complete installation requirements.

Before switching out existing fluorescent troffers, record the grid opening and ceiling system, fixture mounting method, supply voltage, desired lux level, colour temperature and any dimming/control interface. A panel retrofit may need different mounting hardware from a new surface-mount or suspended installation.

The useful decision is not whether 2×2 or 2×4 is always brighter. It is whether a specific panel and its light distribution meet the space's needs after layout and electrical constraints are considered. For model-by-model details, compare LED Panel Lights and read our recessed, surface or suspended panel mounting guide.

2. UFO and Linear LED High Bay Lighting for Warehouses and Open Commercial Areas

High bay lighting is appropriate where the work plane and mounting heights demand a greater output and suitable optics. Round UFO fixtures are compact; linear high bays can suit longer runs or aisles. Neither body shape guarantees better lighting on its own. Photometric data, lumens, beam spread, rack layout and mounting positions determine the result.

Our UFO LED high bays include 200W and 300W options with selectable power and occupancy sensors. The linear LED high bay range lists 80W, 110W, 165W, 225W and 300W options, with occupancy sensing and selectable 3500K/4000K/5000K colour temperature. Check the exact model rather than extrapolating one fixture's specifications to all.

For an industrial or semi-industrial facility, ask for a layout or review the supplied lighting study to consider uniformity, target work-surface illuminance, aisle shadows and glare. Read UFO versus linear comparisons and how to read a photometric report before placing a bulk order. Browse all High Bay Lights.

3. Downlights, Pot Lights and PIR Motion Sensor Ceiling Fixtures

Recessed downlights are a separate lighting decision from grid panels and suspended high bays. They can provide general ceiling illumination, focused accents or task lighting depending on trim design and beam control. Compare LED downlights and pot lights by fixture size, cut-out, ceiling depth, IC or location rating, dimming and CCT—not by diameter alone.

For instance, the Apolo Series 4-inch downlight is a 9W, 5-CCT recessed product listed in a 30-pack. Gimbal downlights allow directional aiming, while slim and trimless options have different mounting and finishing considerations.

Motion-sensor models also differ. Selix Kala's 6-inch PIR LED disk downlight is a 15W, 5-CCT listing with continuous dimming, while the 7-inch PIR flush-mount model is a 12W, 3-CCT listing described as non-dimmable. Compare the pair in our motion-sensor ceiling lighting guide before using them in a commercial or residential project.

4. COB, Neon Flex, Strip and Rope Lighting for Accent Applications

For coves, store fixtures, architectural borders and signage, LED strips and rope lighting offer different options from overhead ambient fixtures. COB strips can create a smooth, densely lit line; Neon Flex diffuses the light through a flexible enclosure; decorative rope or string lights may be designed for event or consumer use rather than fixed commercial installations.

Match the product's rated voltage, wattage per length, driver capacity, controller, cut points and location rating. Our listed indoor 10m COB strips use 24V and include IP20 variants; selected 24V Neon Flex options are rated IP65. Portable 5V USB RGB products require different power supplies. Do not treat these as interchangeable simply because they are all called LED strips.

Learn about specific profiles in our COB versus Neon Flex guide. For compatible supplies, see LED Drivers & Power Supplies. Verify the exact driver and installation components with an electrician or qualified installer.

5. CCT, Watts, Lumens and Controls: What to Compare

Watts are input power; lumens describe light output

Do not compare two fixtures by wattage alone. Consider the lumens delivered by each model, the way its optics distribute light and the illuminance level required at the work surface. A higher-wattage high bay can be necessary for a large elevated mounting area, while a lower-wattage panel or downlight may be suitable for a lower ceiling. See lumens versus watts and multi-pack comparison.

Colour temperature is a design choice, not an efficiency claim

Warmer 2700K/3000K settings can suit welcoming hospitality or residential applications; 4000K and 5000K are often considered for offices and task-intensive commercial spaces. Evaluate the actual visual needs and model options. Review our LED colour-temperature guide.

Occupancy sensing, dimming and network controls are different

PIR or integrated occupancy sensors can reduce unnecessary operating hours. Dimming interfaces such as 0–10V and TRIAC require compatible fixtures and control equipment. Networked controls are not automatically the same program category as ordinary integrated occupancy controls. Confirm electrical and rebate classification rather than assuming all sensor-equipped fixtures qualify.

6. Ontario Save on Energy Instant Discounts: How to Evaluate Eligibility

Selix Kala is an authorized participating distributor in Ontario's Save on Energy Instant Discounts program. It can provide point-of-sale discounts for qualifying lighting purchases used in eligible retrofits to existing commercial, industrial, agricultural, institutional and multi-unit residential facilities in Ontario. New construction and equipment that does not meet the current qualifying rules are not automatically eligible.

Program eligibility is based on specific listed measures, model qualifications, purchaser requirements and installation conditions. A fixture being described as LED, 5-CCT, sensor-equipped or high bay does not by itself prove eligibility. Customers must provide the required business/installation details and any minimum contribution; program terms also restrict double claiming of the same equipment. Decorative strip and rope products must not be marketed as generally rebate-eligible.

See the Selix Kala Ontario Instant Discounts page for a purchasing enquiry, our detailed 2026 rebate guide, and the official Save on Energy Instant Discounts Program. The program may revise qualifying products and incentive levels; confirm details at the time of purchase.

7. Requesting a Wholesale LED Lighting Quote in Toronto and Ontario

A useful wholesale comparison is based on the entire order, not on an isolated web price. For packs, check fixtures per carton and the cost per fixture; for warehouse upgrades, compare usable light output, installation requirements, control systems and expected operating hours. Separate ordinary supply pricing from any eligible incentive shown on the invoice.

When requesting pricing, collect the information below before contacting a supplier:

  • Property and project: Existing building type, city, installation address, intended use and whether this is a retrofit.
  • Existing lighting: Fixture types, approximate quantities, photos or plans, mounting heights, and current electrical supply where known.
  • Desired fixture: Panel dimensions, high bay layout, downlight cut-out or LED strip profile, and any relevant certifications.
  • Light and controls: Preferred CCT, dimming requirements, occupancy sensors, ambient/location rating and technical constraints.
  • Commercial terms: Number of units or cartons, delivery/pickup requirements, project schedule and request for a wholesale quotation.
  • Rebate review: Business name and existing Ontario installation address if requesting an Instant Discounts eligibility check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the best LED fixture for an office ceiling retrofit?

For a suitable suspended ceiling grid, 1×4, 2×2 or 2×4 LED panels may be a practical starting point. The best size and model depend on existing ceiling dimensions, mounting, light levels and electrical requirements.

Should I use UFO or linear LED high bays in my warehouse?

Start with the ceiling layout, work-plane lighting target and a photometric plan. Both styles can work; compare fixture output, beam spread, controls, mounting and the racking or work-zone arrangement.

Can residential LED downlights or decorative LED strips receive Ontario Instant Discounts?

Ordinary residential purchases and general decorative strip products should not be assumed eligible. The Ontario program targets defined qualified equipment and qualifying existing facilities. Confirm the exact product and purchaser criteria before expecting a discount.

Does a wholesale LED quote include a rebate automatically?

No. Ask the distributor to confirm eligible models and any applicable point-of-sale discount separately from the standard price. A listed website price should not be assumed to be rebate-adjusted.
